  • Go through your home and decide what will stay in the house, move, be sold, donated or thrown out - an easy way to make this task manageable is to start with one room at a time
  • Note any specific moving instructions
  • Make a list of valuable or irreplaceable items that should be moved by you
  • Return any loaned items you may have and recuperate any that you have loaned to others hold a garage sale
  • Plan meals to reduce food in pantry and freezer
  • Advise the post office of your move date and forwarding address
  • Make arrangements with the bank to transfer your accounts
  • Complete change of address notices to friends and suppliers – credit cards, subscriptions, doctors
  • Notify your insurance company of new location for continued coverage – life, health, fire, theft, etc…
  • Consider a subscription to the local newspaper of the town you are moving to – this will help you have a head start on current events
  • Collect unused club membership fees or transfer/sell to a friend
  • Check with your veterinarian for travel preparation needs for your pets – if you need help finding out what needs to be done to move your pet, refer to our article on the topic
  • Advise newspaper delivery, milk delivery, and laundry services of date to discontinue services ask your doctor and dentist for referrals and to transfer medical records
  • Dispose of flammables, corrosives, poisons or other hazardous materials – these can not be moved by the moving company
  • If you are moving yourself - be sure to obtain packing materials – sturdy boxes, markers, tape, bubble wrap and tissue
  • Start packing – start with the items you do not use regularly – if you need help learning how to pack, check out our helpful videos
  • Label boxes as clearly as possible – be sure to indicate what is in the box and where it should be moved to
  • Clean out club, gym and school lockers
  • Arrange for babysitters on Moving Day and other days where there may be a lot of activity if you are moving out of a multi-flour building, reserve the elevator for your moving day and reserve one in your new location
  • Empty your safe-deposit box and arrange to transfer valuables (don’t ship these; instead carry them with you)
  • Check requirements for new driver’s license and auto registration in your new locatoin create a folder of useful information about your old home for the new owners (i.e., warranties, service manuals, key contacts) – ask the owners of your new home to do the same
  • Put items such as remotes for garage door openers, attachments for built-in vacuum cleaner, in a specially marked box: “THIS STAYS HERE”
  • Drain gas and oil from lawn mower, chain saw, snow blower, gas grill, kerosene heaters check the dry cleaners and/or fur storage for clothes you may have left there
  • Start packing essential items that will travel with you in suitcases
  • Take down drapes, blinds or permanent fixtures that will be moved
  • Dismantle shelving, sheds, lights, mirrors, and anything that will be moved with you
  • Prepare a special box (label it ‘’LAST-ON FIRST-OFF’’) with essentials from the kitchen and bathroom to be loaded last onto the van; include a hammer, pliers, screwdrivers, nails, flashlight, scissors, masking tape
  • Draw up a schedule or action plan for the day of the move – who is doing what and when
  • Prepare snacks for the trip
  • Phone the moving company to confirm the arrival time of the packers and the moving van
  • Pack your travel bag(s) – toothbrushes, change of clothes, coats, children’s toys for the trip, valuables, snacks, any medical supplies and put them aside
  • Keep your list of telephone numbers and addresses with you
  • Put linens and pillows in dresser drawers so you can easily find them at your new location
  • Gather the keys to the house and leave them with a neighbour, new owners, lawyer or real estate agent
  • Reconfirm your travel arrangements, arrangements for pet travel and shipment of car
  • Give your itinerary to family and/or a friend
  • Secure the money for the movers
  • Stay calm!
  • Remove bedding and take apart beds
  • Be there when the driver arrives, or assign someone to be there
  • Check the inventory with the mover to see if you agree with condition of items; take pictures if you don’t agree
  • Keep a copy of the inventory
  • Write down the name of the van driver, give him telephone numbers at destination and confirm directions to new home
  • Before the moving truck leaves, walk through the empty space to make sure nothing has been left behind
  • Be the last person to leave the home - lock all doors and turn off all lights
  • Try to arrive before the movers – this gives you time to walk through, make sure the utilities are connected and that you know where your furniture is going
  • Check appliances, furnace and hot water heater
  • Check household goods for damage; make a list of lost or damaged goods
  • Ensure the driver takes note of any damage on the inventory sheet; contact the moving company’s destination agent before the van leaves
  • Once the van is unloaded, check the van to make sure nothing has been forgotten
  • If you are using movers, be sure to review your service arrangement to know whether they will set up beds, lay area rugs and place furniture, etc….
  • If things are not being unpacked in one day, make a note on the inventory list “subject to inspection for loss or concealed damage”
  • Check for damages while unpacking – be aware of your insurance deadline to make a claim
  • Replace any locks if necessary
  • Confirm that mail is now arriving at your new address
  • Obtain driver’s, automobile, and pet licenses
  • Contact newspapers, etc. for home delivery
  • Obtain local maps and phonebooks
  • Enjoy your new home!
